"Discoplastis"

The "brick" digital signage box

I'm not very good at keeping my promise to myself about not buying random cheap machines, am I? But this one was different, you see, it can fit a slim optical disc drive! I didn't have a machine with an optical drive in it, so why not have one around? As for its name, the Discoplastis genus of algae is named after its discoid chloroplasts. And they're in the Eukaryotic clade Discoba, named aftert the discoid cristae of their mitochondria. Perfect name for a machine whose primary purpose is to read discs.

First photo: The machine itself. Hybrid Theory for scale. Second photo: the machine inside, with the adapter board for the optical drive and SATA disk removed. Third photo: installing Debian. Fourth photo: its namesake eukaryotic alga.
